To my ladies who meet monsters before Prince Charmings
In 2019, I did a week long poetry residency at Meadowpark Elementary with a 5th grade class. There was a young lady that really stood out. She was a good writer but she was a little shy when it came to performing. Over the week, I was able to build her up enough to feel confident in her NATURAL abilities and she ended up winning 1st place in the poetry slam I held at the end of that week.
Fast forward, 2023. I am asked to be a judge at the speech competition for the NAACP for K-12 graders!
In the highschool category, there was a 9th grade student who decided to make her speech a POEM on Asata Shakur!
I immediately recognized that this 9th grader was the SAME young lady I taught when she was in 5th grade at Meadowpark Elementary‼️
When she did her speech you could just see the confidence! She had her speech committed to memory, she didn’t stand behind the podium, she had BIG ENERGY, BIG CONFIDENCE and her speech even incorporated some of the figurative language skills I taught.
She even WON FIRST PLACE in the NAACP speech competition.
After the competition, me and her talked and she expressed how she never stopped writing poetry, she recited another poem she had wrote to me, and said she wanted to publish book‼️
Her former teacher was also there and told me how the young lady did her black history project on me last year.
